The announcement of Timeline for Facebook Pages has left many small business Facebook page owners a little daunted. I've put together a video with some colleagues where we talk about the changes, how to take advantage of them and we also critique some Facebook Timeline Pages.

Idea Girl Media answers commonly asked questions about Facebook's new Timeline For Business PagesAs a small business owner, Facebook's new Timeline for Brand Pages may have your head spinning.

As a non-profit director or stakeholder, you might even be hesitant to publish your timeline just yet.

After all, Facebook moved the cheese on February 29, 2012 and new features and hidden treasures are found on our Pages each day!

But never fear...

Crowdsourcing Your Curiosities

Social Media allows us to reach out to groups of trusted friends when we have questions on a topic.  So, I took the opportunity to reach out to some Facebook fans and let them ask me some questions.

I was curious about a new online meeting tool - Meetingburner - So it was a chance for me to ask some questions and test a tool.

In the video below we cover:

  • Basics of the new Admin Panel on Facebook Pages.
  • Dimensions of the Timeline Cover Image.
  • Customizing Tab & App Images.
  • Using Facebook as your business brand.
  • Critiques of Facebook Pages & Timeline Appearances.
  • And more.

Commonly Asked Questions About Timeline For Facebook Pages

Note: The sound is a bit shaky at first, but improves a few minutes in.

The video should serve as a session on basics for those that are up for exploring over a cup of coffee.  It is an intimate setting with a small group, so certainly friendly.  Also some great examples of Facebook Pages using varied applications customized to their organization.

My thoughts on Meetingburner will follow in a future blog post - I'm still learning the bells and whistles.  ;)

Great work clearing up some of the trickier points of the new Timeline layout Keri. We have similarly had a lot of questions from our users about how the various elements of Timeline for Pages work. We whipped up an graphic, available at Wishpond, that your readers might also find useful.

Keri, thank you for helping me start to get to grips with Facebook! I really don’t know why I am not enjoying the FB experience! I love Twitter, Pinterest, even Google+ and now Stumbled Upon is grabbing my attention, but FB has always been a flat spot for me! I am constantly looking at ways to make my new site more engaging for expecting mums and I am worried it may be too clinical! What are your thoughts and how can I embrace FB more to work with my brand? Any advice would be very much appreciated – thank you!

Zoe, Facebook – Love it or hate it. Surprisingly enough, there are tons of people on the big blue. And, I’m hearing more and more people not excited. Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, and StumbleUpon all have their value, their worth. StumbleUpon seems more like a traffic driver to me, though. Like basil makes the marinara really yummy. 🙂 I’ve done a preview of your site, and it is appealing at a glance. If you’re positioning your blog as your headquarters and your social networks as your outposts, then you are using a good strategy. Suggestions I’d make to anyone: * Encourage guest bloggers – Your clients and their success/satisfaction stories are perfect. * Encourage a community board on Pinterest – Where your customers can post their pictures to show off your product. * Twitter – Be sure you’re sharing others’ info more than your own. My suggestion on making your site what your clients want: Take a survey….ask them what THEY want. 🙂 On that same survey, ask which social networks they are spending time on. Then, arrange your social outposts accordingly. Hope that helps, Zoe. Thanks for visiting, reading, and for being open to new insight, ~Keri

Hi, I don’t know if it’s possible but I try asking it anyway. I have an unpublished diary for my personal profile, can you please explain how, if it’s possible, to revert back to the original format before it is published? Thanks (it’s a personal profile so there is no admin panel button)

Luca, You should be able to see your old version at any time until the conversion makes it automatic. However, at this time, all personal profiles should be converted over to Timeline. That in mind, it seems logical that Facebook has kept your unpublished diary in the kinetic form of Timeline, as they converted over. This sounds like something you might contact Facebook about – via the Help Menu – Though I believe they will tell you it is past the deadline. Please keep me posted as I’m interested in your progress. Thanks for your question and comment, ~Keri

Two of my created Facebook pages are unpublished – because there is no EDIT PAGE button to click to on the right side of these pages. How do I correct this ?

      By Keri Jaehnig on

Tommy, Great question! Facebook moved that “Edit Page” button on the Timeline. But if you are unpublished, you should be able to make your way back to the original view of your page and click those same word links to edit. In the new Timeline format, the Admin Panel should roll out for you like an accordion at the top of the page. By clicking the “Manage” Button, you’ll see the “Edit Page” the very first choice in the drop down menu when you click “manage.” Click “Edit Page” and you will be led to the very same screen you saw before. The video above does go through this and many of the related questions you may have. You’ll also find more Facebook Timeline info at https://idea-backup.purpleplanet.website/2012/03/facebook-timeline-publishing-your-brand-page/ where the Admin Panel is also covered via video. Hope that helps, Tommy… ~Keri
